Settlers came into the area that is now Celina in the 1800’s by foot, horseback and wagons. Building their homes from logs or hauling lumber from Jefferson, these early families came from Tennessee or Kentucky. Established in 1876, the city’s first postmaster named the town after Celina, Tennessee. About 20 years later, the Frisco railway was slated to extend its line in the area, missing the town. The merchants decided to move the town to the railroad. Houses and businesses were placed on rollers and pulled to the new site, incorporating the town in 1907. Through the years, Celina has had the misfortune of having several devastating fires in its downtown area, leaving some vacant buildings. Recently a number of the older buildings have been renovated and interest is increasing in others being rebuilt. A new high school was built in 1976, and a new elementary school was completed in 1987.
Celina’s unique small town charm combined with the booming metropolis, culture and arts of nearby Ft. Worth and Dallas, makes it a perfect balance of country and city living. With several public and private schools from which to choose, easy transportation of the nearby Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport, as well as the year-round mild climate, Celina presents a comprehensive offering for just about anyone.
